The park rules come from Parks Victoria's Wilsons Promontory pages, the Penguin Parade details from Phillip Island Nature Parks, the school holiday dates from the Victorian Government and the events from Visit Victoria and Visit Gippsland, checked on 5 November 2026. Parks Victoria has not yet posted a summer 2026-27 page, so the summer rules below are last summer's: check the park page before you travel.
Summer here is long evenings and full car parks. Both are easy to plan around.
The quick answer
Victorian schools break up on Friday 18 December 2026 and go back on 27 January 2027, and that is when Gippsland is busiest. At Wilsons Prom there is no entrance fee, but Parks Victoria limits vehicles, tells day visitors to arrive before 10am and has run a free shuttle from Tidal River to Telegraph Saddle in school holidays. Tidal River books out months ahead. On Phillip Island the penguins arrive after 8 pm in summer, and the Penguin Parade has limited seats in December and January: book it before you drive down.
How busy is Wilsons Prom in summer, and when should you arrive?
Very busy in the school holidays. Parks Victoria says Tidal River, Norman Beach and Squeaky Beach often fill up by mid-morning, and asks day visitors to carpool and arrive before 10am.
Last summer Parks Victoria put limits on vehicle numbers: campers may bring at most two cars per site, and extra cars cannot park in the day visitor areas. A free shuttle ran between Tidal River and Telegraph Saddle, the start of the Mount Oberon walk, daily from 9 am to 6 pm in the school holidays. There is no entrance fee to the park, and no fuel or EV charging at Tidal River: fill up at Yanakie, Fish Creek or Foster.
Weekdays outside the holidays are calmer, says Parks Victoria. The other way around the parking problem is to let someone else handle it: the Wilsons Prom day tour leaves Melbourne at 6:30 am, the parking is the driver's problem, and the guide picks the walk. Anne-Sophie (Aug 2026): “His recommendations also helped us choose the best hike and gave us the best views of the national park depending on the weather conditions [...]”
| Date | What happens | What it means |

| Friday 18 December 2026 | Victorian term 4 ends | The Prom starts to fill; last summer the free shuttle ran daily in the holidays |

Check dates for the Wilsons Prom day tourCan you still book Tidal River for summer 2026-27?
Only if a site is free. Parks Victoria takes Tidal River bookings first in, first served, says summer accommodation is often booked out many months in advance, and you cannot book or stay if you turn up after hours without one.
Tidal River has 484 camping and caravan sites, plus cabins, lodges and the safari-style Wilderness Retreats, and Visit Gippsland notes that the roofed options book out early. Check Parks Victoria's booking site for cancellations. Campfires and solid-fuel barbecues are banned at all times, and Tidal River is a shared 10 km/h zone. The General Store reopened on 7 May 2026 under a new operator.
No site? A day trip still works. The walk from Tidal River to Squeaky Beach is 4.2 km, Mount Oberon starts from Telegraph Saddle, and our Wilsons Promontory guide gives distances and times for each.
What time is the Penguin Parade in summer?
Late. The penguins come ashore at sunset every night, and in summer that means after 8 pm, per Phillip Island Nature Parks' arrival calendar. Arrive an hour before the penguin arrival time on your ticket.
Phillip Island Nature Parks says bookings are essential, seats are limited in December and January, and you should arrive at the times shown on your ticket. From mid-December to late January it asks you to allow extra travel time because of the traffic. General Viewing costs A$34 for adults, A$17 for children aged 4 to 15 and A$85 for a family. Photos are not allowed once the penguins arrive.
The late finish is where a day tour earns its keep. The V/Line coach does not go to the Penguin Parade, and there is no bus back to Melbourne after it. The Penguin Parade Eco Tour picks up in Melbourne between 10 am and noon in season, stops at Moonlit Sanctuary and the Nobbies, adds Cape Woolamai in the summer months and has the Parade ticket included. Lucie (Oct 2026): “The whole tour is well organised with enough breaks to get food/drinks/toilet.”

Pick by what you want to do. Squeaky Beach for the walk and the sand, Lakes Entrance for a patrolled surf beach and fresh prawns, and the Gippsland Lakes for calm water.
Squeaky Beach is the Prom's most photographed beach, and its fine, rounded quartz squeaks under your feet. It is not patrolled, and Parks Victoria does not recommend swimming there because of persistent rips. Hooded plovers nest on Prom beaches from August to April, so keep to the wet sand and give them room. At Lakes Entrance, Visit Gippsland says the surf beach is patrolled in summer, and prawns are sold off the trawlers on the Esplanade in season.
For still water, head to the lakes. The five-minute ferry from Paynesville to Raymond Island is free for pedestrians and cyclists, and the island's Koala Trail is a 1.2 km loop. Ninety Mile Beach runs for just over 151 km if you want a stretch of sand to yourself. The Gippsland Lakes guide covers Metung, Paynesville and the cruises.
| Weather station | Warmest month, mean max | Rainfall |
|---|---|---|
| Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse | 20.4°C (January) | 1,057.5 mm a year |
| Phillip Island Penguin Reserve | 23.8°C (February) | 713.6 mm a year |
| East Sale (near the lakes) | 25.6°C (January) | 593.3 mm a year |

What's on in Gippsland in summer 2026-27?
Markets every month, the Creative Harvest Festival on 23 to 24 January 2027 and the South Gippsland Garlic Festival on 27 February 2027.
The monthly markets are the easiest to fit into a trip: Churchill Island's farmers' market on Phillip Island on the first Saturday, and the Lakes Entrance foreshore market on the first Sunday. Before summer starts, the Sale Producers Market and the Warragul Farmers' Market both fall on 21 November 2026. Dates come from Visit Victoria, Visit Gippsland and Phillip Island Nature Parks; check with the organiser before you drive out.

| 5 December 2026, 2 January and 6 February 2027 | Churchill Island Farmers' Market | Phillip Island, first Saturday of each month |
| 6 December 2026, 3 January and 7 February 2027 | Lakes Entrance Surf Club Foreshore Market | First Sunday of each month |

| 23 to 24 January 2027 | Creative Harvest Festival | West Gippsland food gardens open to visitors |
| 27 February 2027 | South Gippsland Garlic Festival | “Victoria's biggest celebration of Australian garlic” |
What should you book ahead for a Gippsland summer?

Geoff (Mar 2026), on the Prom day: “Worth the long drive as the coast and the NP are excellent.” For the full list of places by area, see our Penguin Parade guide and the rest of the guides.
